One of my favourite things to eat is soup! It can be so nutritious and delicious. One of my favourite soup is Quebecois Pea Soup…and not just because I am from Quebec!

A bowl of good pea soup is so comforting, easy to make and healthy!

I also love making soups because I can make a big pot and it provides several meals for Rick and I that we can tuck away in the fridge and freezer for work lunches or a quick supper. There isn’t really anything special about my recipe and it compares to most you’ll find on the internet, so I’m mostly doing this for fun! Enjoy!

Quebecois Pea Soup


16oz yellow split peas

6 cups of Chicken broth or vegetable broth (or 3 cups broth, 3 cups water)

3 Stalks of celery

3 Large carrot sticks

1 Medium onion

1 Tablespoon olive oil

Garlic Salt

Italian Herbs

Bay Leaves

Salt & pepper


Dice your onion, carrot and celery. In a large pot, heat your 1 tablespoon of olive oil and then add your onion. Cook for a couple of minutes until the onions become fragrant. Then add your carrots and celery. Cook for about 5 minutes.

Add your peas, broth, herbs and spices. I did not specify how much because you can just add it to your taste. I usually add 2 bay leaves.

Bring to a boil and then simmer on low-medium heat for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally until peas are soft and soup is your desired consistency.

I prefer my pea soup nice and thick, so I usually end up cooking it for about 3 hours. I also often have to add more water or broth. Just pay attention to what the soup is looking like and add more water, broth or herbs if you desire! Just do your thang! 😉


Now, some people really love adding ham to their pea soup and I have to say that I do not really like it. I know, I know. Don’t hate! I grew up eating Habitant pea soup and I hated the ham in it because it was fatty and gross. So I think that turned me off to it. I’ll have to try and make it sometime with a good quality ham and see if I like it. However, tonight I did not something a little different! I added bacon! I cooked my bacon in the oven till crispy and then chopped it all up and threw it in. It was pretty good! It added some smoky flavours. Rick really loved it! But to be honest, I’m not sure if I’ll do it again.
